Leaf Arch

IMG_2181

As a followup on Leaf Topography  and Leafscapes of last week, I have some more teazle leave macros. The arch in the leaf structures really interested me and I took quite a few shots of it.

I am not sure why, but I notice a lot of black and white on my recent posts. Maybe my mood has been darkened by the deluge we are having – November style rain 6 weeks early.

  1. I like these quite a bit. I’m surprised you were able to get this close with just the macro and no attachments. I just purchased some extension tubes last week. I have all winter to learn how to use them.

    • Hi Ken. The leaves are very large. The arch in this photo is probably half an inch wide. So, I was not all that close. My macro goes to 1:1 and I am often comfortable hand holding, in good light. I usually shoot quite a few shots to make sure I have the right focus point, becuase I seem to sway a bit in and out from the subject when shooting and that can throw things off badly.

      • I’m involved in a leaf photo project at the moment and I hope to be able to post the shots soon. I think you may be interested, at least I hope so. Some shots are very similar to these.

      • I will be really interested to see them. I expect to learn something from yours (no pressure!), as often happens when I see your photos.

    • BTW, I forgot to say how exciting that you have bought some extension tubes. Are you using your older macro lens – I think once you said you had a 50 or 55mm micro which are very nice lenses. With the extension tubes (and maybe a reversing ring) you should be able to get to about x2 magnification (with a full frame sensor). At that kind of magnification macro work starts to get challenging, especially hand held (that is when a motor drive really can save the day).
