Pumphouse
The “red pumphouse” at my parents’ place.

Looks like the pumphouse beside our home…ours is white and covered with vines. Lovely red color on your photo.

Hi Sherry – there are two on the property. This was a shallow and not very productive well, at least by the time my family moved here in the late 60s. The pump and related hardware sat unused for years, and then were removed to make more room for other stuff. The other pumphouse, which is brown, only just went out of use, for water, when the pump died.

Good photo. That horseshoe, I think, came from the c. 1920s dump at Aylard’s Farm on Wain Road. All I found was ton of broken milk bottles with “Delaval” written on them, horseshoes, field stones, and rusty metal scraps and discarded farm implements. I still have a scar on my hand from trying to pry a bottle out from under a hay rake blade. North Saanich was quite a rural place in the early 1970s.

Funny how this pumphouse elicits so many memories. For me it is the smell of apples that used to be stored on slatted shelving in here.
