Square Lines

2014-XA2-001-004

More test shots from the Olympus XA2. These three photos are taken in Market Square a few steps from where I bought the camera.

These are among the first 5 shots I took with the XA2. I like all of them, and there are more in this series, some of which I might even like better.

Bin There

2014-XA-003-02

This was shot from a recessed door entry early one morning. The location was the entrance to my office for years, so I have been here many times.

I was going to take this picture without a person since I liked the shadow from the rubbish bin, and the nice car over the way.

But someone walked through the picture, gave me the idea it would be better and so I waited for a likely subject to come by.

This was taken with an Olympus XA on colour film, and converted to black and white in Lightroom 5.

Tread Carefully

2014-XA2-002-021

I have been testing an Olympus XA2 for my neighbour. It has a persistent though intermittent light leak that I am trying to solve, which means in three days I have run 2 rolls of film through it.

This is one of my favourite photos from those experiments. While not immediately obvious, it is shadows on stair treads. The not immediately obvious part is what I like about it.

Words Not Necessary

Time’s Measure

2014-XA-003-05-2

This child was getting her face done at the Moss Street Market a few weeks ago, under the close scrutiny of a boy that she does not know.

He was just watching; from the looks of it an artist in the making.

I have known this girl since she was born, and I can’t believe how grown up she seems now.

Children are time’s surest measuring stick – the one by which we note our own years passing.

Finger Light

2014-XA-003-11

I had my Olympus XA point and shoot primed and ready for a shot as I walked down the street.

Holding it cupped in my hand I accidentally fired the shutter.

This then is the view of the inside of my cupped hand, out between my nearly closed fingers.

I find it somehow reminiscent of those ubiquitous desert slot canyon photos.

EDIT: check out the comments below for some other versions of this photo.

Macro Skipper

IMG_5296

A couple of days ago I found six or seven skippers on this small patch of flowers in the upper intertidal zone on the pebble beach in Trafalgar Park. These butterflies really get around, and quickly so they are not all that easy to photograph. But, with patience, they came within range of my macro lens, though never as close I wanted. Cropping solved that problem. I was draped over a comfortable boulder that gave very good support to my one arm so hand-holding was not an issue.

I don’t know which skipper it is (I am guessing it is the Woodland Skipper), nor do I know what the flowers are (not even guessing on that one). Thank goodness I don’t claim to be a naturalist!
