Varnished

IMG_4980-Edit

I believe that this man owns this boat. Snatches of conversation overheard suggest this, as does his posture. Besides which he was varnished by the sun to exactly the same tone, and nearly the same colour, as the boat. It took a bit of effort in post to pull his face out from the all the varnished wood around him.

Copper Bow

IMG_5046-2

Another shot from the Classic Boat Festival. This one is also rotated, because I like the form and it looks better to my eye this way. If it bothers you, then you can rotate your head towards your left shoulder and that will make it the right way up, or turn your screen. Or, just look at the version below.

Anyone else like the wee little fish?  For other images in this series, check out this link.

Classic Boat Festival

IMG_5028

Yesterday I went down to Victoria’s inner harbour to gawk at all the wooden boats on display at the Classic Boat Festival. Naturally I had my camera. But I kept on being distracted from the boats by their reflections. This shot being but one of several examples, others of which you will likely see as I process the images.

Flintknapping Time-lapse

Finishing the base

This is the probably the last of the mini-series from my visit to Dan Stueber’s flintknapping class at the University of Victoria and is about a time-lapse video we made of Dan pressure flaking a small corner-notched projectile point. The point would be suitable for use as an arrowhead or on an atlatl dart.

The video below is a timelapse that shows Dan pressure flaking a flake of stone to shape it into a tool. The video is rendered at 8 fps from 1,266 frames shot at a 1 second interval. In a couple of places I have inserted a string of image duplicates to briefly freeze the action. Total elapsed time for this sequence was a bit less than 22 minutes.

Below the video are selected stills to illustrate different aspects of this method, followed by a gallery with more examples.

Pond Lily Carpet

IMG_1932

Another in my series from Royal Roads University. This pond is carpeted with lilies, and when we were there was so brightly lit I could barely stand to look at it from a darker patch of shade under some conifers. I like the way the light makes it all very abstract.

Hatley Castle Metal

IMG_1857_8_9

More shots from my visit to Royal Roads University, a continuation from yesterday’s post. For some reason my camera was drawn to odd bits of metal. Perhaps the reason is the way they contrast to the stone. I wouldn’t mind a door bell like the one above at my place. Just as a decoration, hanging on the wall indoors even.
