Yesterday I went to considerable lengths to remove the blue from the view of Mount Baker taken from Island View beach.
Yesterday I exposed you all to the horrible wasteland of an adhoc “seawall” at Island View Beach. Enough to deter one from visiting the place. Except, the view truly is terrific. It looks at James Island in BC and San Juan Island in Washington State in the distance, and in the far distance and on a clear day, Mt. Baker.
For the past few days I have shown insects amid thistles on Island View beach, down towards the south end of the beach. Island View Beach is in the municipality of Central Saanich a few miles north of Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula. It is one of the few sand and gravel beaches in the Victoria area, and in recognition of it’s special nature the north end is a park. The south end is quite another matter.
This fly is trying pretty hard to look like a wasp.
This is the last in my series of wasps/flies on thistles where I have been exploring tone-mapping vs. lightroom processing. I think that for this fly, the tone mapping has the edge – the background has not suffered too much and in some ways is more interesting, and the improvement in the fly and especially the wings seems worth the effort.
More of the recent starlings that populated my photos for a while.
More insects collecting pollen on the thistles at Island View Beach last weekend; this time it is a fly in disguise as a bee.
Again, I tried tone-mapping these images, as well as straight Lightroom processing, as with my recent thistle wasp post. After looking at the previous efforts, and receiving comments from some of you, I revisited the tone-mapped versions of these images and did some noise reduction. It helped a bit – especially for image 4 in the gallery below and not very much for image 2 and 6. I still like the LR4 versions better overall even though parts of the flies, the wings especially, are better in the tone-mapped versions.
These pictures all have one thing in common – thistle-down. On a walk this weekend we came across a large patch of thistles with their down in clumps and mats like exploded cotton pillows.
