Masset Fish and Chips

On my trip to Haida Gwaii in June I posted about Queen B’s excellent coffee shop in Charlotte, so thought it only fair to do one in Masset too. There is a very good coffee shop in Masset (‘Grounds’) but I don’t have any photos of it. I had been regretting this lack of balance between the trips when we found, while at the airport, that our flight was delayed. The person that had given us a ride suggested we go back into town for something to eat.

We ended up at the fish and chip shop that is south of the Delkatla Nature Sanctuary between the airport turnoff and the south end of the causeway in the Village of Masset (as opposed to Old Massett where the potlatch was held). See map here for general area. It is part of the Hidden Island RV and Fishing Resort; the rest of their business I know nothing about and have no opinion on. We had not made it for fish and chips during our visit, despite good recommendations. So, I got some pictures while waiting for our orders (which came very quickly). As the food was excellent, and the exterior shingle work very photogenic, I am happy to make this post.

We had a nice chat with the friendly server about the potlatch we had come for and which she had also attended. The restaurant shares space with a tackle shop, but those pictures all suffered from motion sickness (too slow shutter speed) so I deleted them.

Sangan River Blues II

Sangan River Dunes

More from my most recent trip to Haida Gwaii, supplementary posts to those I posted in June and early July (see this link) concerned almost entirely with an archaeological project in the southern end of Haida Gwaii more than 200km away. This is another post from a walk we took at the mouth of the Sangan River.

The whole North Beach area along the north-west coast of Graham Island features extensive dunes spreading off into the forest on gradually higher elevated and stranded beach ridges resulting from slowly rising land levels for more than 5000 years. Thus the older shorelines are now many kilometers inland in this area and make for a serious challenge to archaeologists trying to find the older sites.

North Beach Greys

More from my recent trip to Haida Gwaii. These black and white shots are all from North Beach which is located between Massett to the east and Tow Hill to the west (visible in the distance in one of these shots – see map here). This is one of the few beaches left in BC where you can are allowed to drive on the sand. I don’t mind bikes, but when I am out in the “middle of nowhere” it is pretty disconcerting to have a jeep blast past on the beach. Every now and then the unwary lose a vehicle to the sea, so I suppose a price is exacted by nature.

Sangan River Blues

My partner and I have just spent four days in Haida Gwaii attending a potlatch – a friend was being made a chief. The event was terrific – we were honoured to be invited, and so happy to be able to attend and witness this historic event. I don’t know if I will be showing any pictures of the potlatch on this blog; that could get quite complicated. I will however be showing pictures of some of our walks and outings that we took while there. The event was in Old Massett which is at the north end of Graham Island. This is completely the other end of Haida Gwaii from the Kilgii Gwaay site that I featured for much of June and early July on these pages (see this link).

Trafalgar Burn

The area of Trafalgar Park that burned last year is returning to a green state, all sharp and thorny like it used to be. For the past year I have tried to get pictures, that work, of the charred stems of gorse and broom and other species that were fired, without a lot of success.
