Macro Salt Shaker

This weekend has been busy in a number of ways. One of them has been fitting in time to try out an incredible lens that I rented – the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x macro. This lens only takes macro shots, it does not focus to infinity, and its depth of field is so narrow you have to wonder if it focusses at all. I did read up on it before renting it so had some idea what to expect. This is a typical review – the review has a tone of awe about it, it is such a quirky, narrow-use and yet magnificent lens. And I have to agree. It is so hard to use that all I have done so far is try to master its technical challenges, I have been so distracted that I have not thought much about composition or making more interesting pictures with it. Though, if you are taking a picture of a flower bud and can see the cellular structure, that is interesting all by itself, to me.

Easter Erythronium

Today’s post features the White Fawn Lily, Erythronium oregonum, sometimes also called the Easter Lily or Trout Lily. It is one of the early spring flowers, native to this region and a favourite of mine ever since growing up with them on my parent’s property. These are in a patch on the north boundary of Beacon Hill Park beneath a small grove of Garry Oak, a common habitat in which to find them.

Beach Graffiti

This is another view of the beach in front of Beacon Hill Park, featured in previous posts such as last week’s Log Ashore . This another long exposure used both to catch the waves in motion but also to blur out of sight the many people walking on the beach as this was one of the first nicer days of the spring (even though the sky says otherwise, it was warm, not raining).

Ladder of Procrastination

Holga-ish Ladder

This detail shot of a ladder up the inside of the Johnson Street Bridge was taken a couple of weeks ago. I was preparing some bridge photos for an upcoming post when Google automatically updated my version of Picasa which is what I have been using for post-processing. The new version (3.9.0, Build 135.93, 0) has a lot of additional effects and other gadgets for making photos interesting, bizarre or just plain ugly.

Troubled Bridge IV

Another image from the removal of the railway span of Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge a few weeks ago. This picture was taken a week ago when I went to the bridge with my ‘new’ wide-angle lens to document more of what is left of the bridge, and its current condition.
