Just before Christmas I had about 20 minutes to kill downtown on a frosty clear morning. Just enough time to rush out to the Johnson Street Bridge and take a few quick pictures. I noticed that the bridge had an interesting reflection in the window of the control shack where the operator resides, raising the bridge for marine traffic when needed. I was peering and pointing my camera when the door next to the window opened abruptly. How embarrassing, it must have looked like I was looking in, when I was just trying to get the reflection lined up. Which needless to say did not really happen.
In the past two weeks I have posted several pictures of waves on rocks during a storm – one a series of shots from the same tripod setup but at different exposures, another with details that appear to be miniature landscapes and one of a stormy bay. These were all taken on the same evening as today’s image. This one is taken at the bottom end of Crescent Street (map) looking south south east along the beach in front of the Chinese Cemetery. It was taken well after the other ones, the light had pretty much failed and it is looking away from the sunset rather than at right angles to it all of which contributes to a different feel than the other pictures.
This is another in the series of posts featuring long exposures of the water’s edge around Harling Point. This tide pool is at the base of the fence post that I recently featured, and near to many other of the pictures in this series, which started on New Year’s day. The first image is a 30 second exposure at f22. (more…)
Like my recent posts of an arbutus tree and rose hips, this is from a walk at the end of the afternoon when the light was really poor. I am pretty sure that the people that live on the other side of the street see to it that the hedge is trimmed frequently as it would easily block their view if left untamed.
As with last Friday, and New Year’s day, I have a long exposure of the ocean from the east side of Harling Point, all taken during the same sunrise. This view is looking to the north past pebble beach and into a corner of McNeill Bay.
These are from the other set of the photographs that I took beside the pond behind the Red Barn Market grocery store on West Saanich Road last weekend. A few days ago I posted images taken at the margins of the pond, mostly of plants caught against the backdrop of a rusty tank. Today’s sets look across the pond at swans (mostly) from beside that rusty tank. This post is for my wife who is especially happy when I take pictures of birds.
This sunrise was photographed 10 minutes before the one that I began the new year with, just a bit along the rocks from that photo. I decided to try getting a shot of the sunrise while moving the camera. In the top picture I moved the camera continuously during the exposure, in the bottom picture I held it still momentarily and then moved it, tyring to stay more parallel with the horizon than I did with the first one.
