Instax Mini 8 with Monochrome Film

My next offering over at 52 Rolls. This time experimenting with the new Fuji Instax Monochrome film, mostly indoors with flash. I quite the look even though the camera is very simple. I do discover some information that will help me make better photos with this camera.

Roll 41 and we are at week 48 for the year so that is reassuring, especially as I have 5 rolls scanned and ready to go. Except one of those rolls which the lab scanned through the plastic sleeve (if you can believe that).

You can see most of the pack, plus a few from an earlier colour pack at 52 Rolls, so click on the 52 Rolls link (here) .

2016-instax8-003-6

Three months ago Fujifilm announced the release of Instax Mini Monochrome, a new instant film. It is important and wonderful that they are making new kinds of film, though the pleasure is much diminished by their discontinuation of several other film types in the past year or so.

This film is already easy to find in my area; in fact I found some on sale for a couple of dollars off, which is a good thing as it is quite pricey at CAN$13-$14/pack, or with tax, $1.50/shot. Even so, instant film is fun, especially with an almost 4-year old in tow. And, trying out different cameras and finding how to make the most of them is also a lot of fun – perhaps more so where the “most” is pretty hard to come by.

There are quite a few things I did not know in enough detail until I started…

Breach

8tansy_and_humpback-3

While on the Passing Cloud we saw Humpback whales many times.

This one was seen in Louscoone Inlet for about an hour – it was slapping its pectoral fins on the water surface for long periods, punctuated by the occasional dive and a couple of breaches.

I could have sworn I posted these already, but I guess it was Tansy that posted it on her blog.

I post these shots for my English cousin Rachel who was on a cruise in the NE Pacific this summer and chose to watch a breaching humpback in stereo, rather than with one eye glued to the viewfinder, as she described on her blog yesterday. Which is why I was looking for these shots.

Rose Harbour Endings

My Roll 40 at 52 Rolls is the last of my 2016 Haida Gwaii rolls of film. The lead shot in the post is my favourite from Haida Gwaii this year, digital or film. None of the photos on this roll have shown up on Burnt Embers yet, so head over to 52 Rolls to see the full roll from Rose Harbour in Houston Stewart Channel.

The last day of my time aboard the Passing Cloud we ended up in the anchorage at Rose Harbour, on the north shore of Kunghit Island. This is located on the south side of Houston Stewart Channel which divides Moresby and Kunghit Islands. Rose Harbour (map link) was a whaling station during the last century and a large piece of land remains in a land co-operative outside of the Gwaii Haanas protected areas. Three or four people live there for much of the year and they provide guiding services and accommodation for visitors that fly or boat in. The remains of the whaling station are interesting to look at though we did not do that this trip.

I worked on Ellen Island (Kilgii Gwaay) across Rose Harbour a few times in the last 15 years working on an archaeological excavation. That site has stone, wood and bone preservation of artifacts…

My Roll 39 at 52 rolls is shots from around Kunghit Island at the south end of Haida Gwaii. I can’t reblog it via the usual WordPress tools for some reason. So, if you would like to see this roll of film, with many seascapes from around Kunghit Island, and beach scenes from Woodruff Bay, then click on this link to take you to the post at 52rolls.
