Testing a Minolta AF-Sv (aka the “Talker”)

My roll 30 for 2016 at 52Rolls, which catches me up numerically to the end of July. This camera is an oddity, with a nice lens. I will have to run more film through it but with ISO set 2 or 3 stops slower than box speed just to compensate for the meter. Check out the original post at 52Rolls for nearly the whole roll and more opinion about the camera.

2016-talk-9

A year and a half ago I published a post Testing a Minolta AF-S. For some inexplicable reason that post has been the most viewed on 52Rolls, with half a dozen views pretty much every day. Why? The camera is not all that special, though I do like the lens quality. So, it’s a mystery to me that I’d love to have cleared up in the comments section below.

I recently found a variant, the Minolta AF-Sv, which is in all but one important aspect the same camera. The v in the name is “voice” and that is because this camera, known as the Talker, talks (yes, that’s right) at you. It has a nearly incomprehensible voice telling you (along with warning lights in the viewfinder) there is no film, that it is too dark (in other words use the flash) and check distance when it thinks the subject is…

Sandspit – Haida Gwaii

Roll 29 from this year is now up at 52 Rolls. A few of the pictures from this roll have shown on my blog earlier this fall, but most have not yet surfaced here, so click on the link to get to 52Rolls and have a look – nearly the whole roll is posted there.

2016-olymjuii-007-22

One of my trips this past summer was to Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands). My trip took me to work for several weeks as an on-board expert on a cruise. The vessel was the Passing Cloud, a schooner that spends part of each year in the Gwaii Haanas national park at the south end of Haida Gwaii. To get there we landed at the Sandspit airport on the NE corner of Moresby Island and spent a night prior to boarding a float plane for the trip down to the boat. These shots were all taken in Sandspit, see this link for a map of the location.

Due to weight and space considerations the only film camera I took with me was the Olympus mjuii (aka Stylus Epic) – it had performed well for me in Gwaii Haanas in the summer of 2015 (if you search this blog you…

Mayne Island with Canon Elan IIe

More catching up on 52Rolls, this time from a visit to Mayne Island earlier in the year. Some in the gallery have been seen on my blog a few months ago, but several have not so click through to 52 Rolls to see more than a dozen images.

Earlier in the year I made a trip to visit family on Mayne island. Near their place is a nice shoreline walk out to Edith Point (map link here). Like many of the Gulf Islands in the Salish Sea, Mayne Island has extensive stretches of sandstone shoreline, often beautifully sculpted by the waves.

I took a Canon Elan IIe wearing an EF 50/f1.4 USM lens and loaded with Kodak Portra 160. A very nice combination to present as my Roll 28 for this year.

Some of these photos, and others from the same roll, have appeared on my blog earlier this year – you can find them at this link.

Testing a Pentax Espio 120SW

My efforts to catch up at 52 Rolls continue, though this time with just one roll. I have posted nearly all 14 shots in this post about 6 months ago, but maybe you missed some or all of them. If that is possible, then click through on the link to find the gallery from these very small little film camera.

2016-120sw-001-002

Around the time I interrupted my posting regime here at 52 Rolls I found this sweet little camera and ran a roll of Agfa Vista 200 through. It is a little (and I mean little) point and shoot Pentax – the Espio 120SW. I knew of this camera from the excellent Film Advance blog where it is listed as one of Gary’s favourite cameras. Head over to that post for a detailed technical review, no need for me to repeat things here. If you are not familiar with the blog, then have a good browse – you won’t be disappointed. Gary lives in the same town as me and we went out to shoot one day and it was his pocket camera so I had a close look at it then. When I saw one in the thrift store for $9 I had a pretty good idea what I was…
