Cemetery Alley

There is an unnamed alley between Ross Bay Cemetery and St. Charles Street. I often walk down it as it leads from the grocery store to the water front, and if I am walking through the cemetery, then I come out on the alley in the route normally taken. Today’s pictures are from along the alley, a map of which can be seen here (it even has street view images if you are so inclined).

I thought that B&W suited the subject and the proximity to the cemetery which always presents itself better in monochrome. The real pleasure of the alley is arriving at its south end on a higher walkway that overlooks Ross Bay. It is a great vantage point for the bay, and an abrupt and satisfying threshold from the more urban into nature.

    • I like it exactly for that reason. Those signs are bright red, and all over this part of town, often way too large and totally in your face, along with all their vehicles being bright red. Its all pretty obnoxious ‘branding’, and usually is immaculately maintained, so it was nice to find one akimbo.

    • Thanks Toad – that is great response to a post with few words. A reminder that distilling what I have to say into more compact space can work well (if I had the time – I sometimes read old posts and cringe at the ‘superfluity of language’ and then remember that it was a struggle to get the post out that day).

    • Hilarious – as I read this comment my cat head-bumped my leg, and mewed. It is close to her dinner time, so not necessarily in appreciation of the photo. But a good confluence of cat none the less.

  1. I have to say if this is walking distance from your house you live in a very nice neighborhood. Great shots and I do like the monotone. I especially like the first photo. Emo likes it too!

    • Hi Ken. Its about 15 minute walk, 10 at a brisk pace. That is a very nice gate, and my cat likes it too – She wants to know why we don’t have one as well.
