Varnished

I believe that this man owns this boat. Snatches of conversation overheard suggest this, as does his posture. Besides which he was varnished by the sun to exactly the same tone, and nearly the same colour, as the boat. It took a bit of effort in post to pull his face out from the all the varnished wood around him.

Excellent photo Ehpem. The boat appears to by this man’s life and you captured it perfectly!

That is a good observation David. I wonder if he lives on it. The boat itself had the feeling of being lived aboard – a little bit less perfect than many of those on display.

He definitely looks like he owns that boat! A very natural pose, and I love the jumble of reflections in the main window

Thanks Andy – jumble is a very good word. Some of that is the view through the far window too. It makes it hard to discern anything, but there are a lot of nautical bits and pieces.

Love this, great work Ehpem! I always get very nervous in shooting people too, and am pleasantly surprised most of the time when I do. This is a great example of this genre!

Thanks Toad. I hear that people who do it all the time lose their nerves about it. Maybe when I have a more pocket-sized camera I will be testing that theory.

Still there is quite a bit of contrast, especially in the reflections, in this photo. He’s got a great expression, too.

Thanks Ken, I had to shoot that expression and the posture. I actually pulled the whites down in the reflections a bit. Perhaps even a touch too much.

Very good picture, too.

It’s rare to see a portrait on this page. Very nice. Definitely a man at home in his surroundings.

Thanks Vicki. Very true about the portraits. I feel uncomfortable taking them. This guy though was on display with his boat. He must have mentally consented to having his picture taken by strangers. Even so, I pointed the lens at something else on the side of his boat and caught him in the periphery of the wide-ish angle as I did not want to seem like I was taking his picture (and cropped the left side off later). Shy that way I guess, with strangers.
