Decay

2016-ElanIIe-001-014

This is another shot from a badly degraded roll of expired Kodak colour film.

However, in this instance I think it works pretty well.

This bridge is being replaced and thus is not seeing any more maintenance.

And so it decays before our eyes – the colour fades more every week and  more and more paint peels off showing older paint beneath, and rust.

A bit of decayed film grain does not go amiss in this instance. (more…)

Approach with Caution

2016-XA2-002-010

I have not idea what this display is for – it is in a hallway that serves as the back entrance to an old tea shop.

I guess it is just for someone’s amusement.

Getting people like me wondering what the heck is going on. Or something.

It is a good place to test films and cameras though, not very bright, not great light, pushes them a bit.

Obscured

2016-ElanIIe-001-010

This is a classic example of expired film not performing well.

The reason I photographed this hydro control station is because the area in shadow has very slightly jarring messages when compared to the part that is in light.

They can’t be made clear with this crappy film, but you can just make out the dire warnings like Danger Keep Out and some human actions with a red circle and line over top.

Cherish, Value, Vision seem a bit at odds, in tone at least, with Danger, Out, Don’t. But maybe that is just me. (more…)

Bulbs for Sale

2016-ElanIIe-002-031

Last month this was the scene in the floral section of a small grocery some distance from where I live.

There was something about it that I liked enough to cross the street and take this picture.

Though putting my finger on it exactly is a bit hard all this time later.

Re-bar

2016-OlyMJUII-005-034

The Rebar is an excellent vegetarian restaurant in Victoria.

You might imagine from the name hard-as-steel celery sticks or apple crisp with the consistency of reinforced concrete.

If you did, you would be wrong, or out to lunch as some might say. They have an excellent cookbook too which we use several times a month.

I suppose that there is some kind of pun in the name, hence the hyphen in the neon sign (though they don’t use that hyphen anywhere else).

If it is a pun, I have not figured the “re” part out. Maybe someone will help me.
