Golden sand grains flow across a beach in Wells Cove on the west shore of Gwaii Haanas, Haida Gwaii.
See my earlier post Sandscape for more about this visit.
Spotted at the Comox Valley Farmers Market.
My work in the Discovery Islands this summer had (mostly) excellent weather.
Here are some of the crew testing a very ancient beach edge as determined by changes to sea level.
The hope is to find archaeological sites the same age as the land when it was next to the ocean.
A few days ago I posted a shot of my darling granddaughter and her father in the Red Tree coffee shop in Courtenay.
While I took a work call they went out to play.
The coffee shop is in a place locally called Tin Town.
It has way too much corrugated iron to be restful for the eyes.
But it is interesting to photograph.
Another shot of chock blocks from the car deck of the MV Powell River Queen.
This one taken on my way out of the Discovery Islands last Saturday.
Our field project there was very successful; perhaps I will be able to write about it on these pages sometime.
Today I am on a boat from the Village of Queen Charlotte down to the Bischof Islands.
You can see a picture of the Bischofs in this link.
I will be staying in the float camp just visible in the protected bay in the middle of the islands.
Back to the sandscapes from Wells Cove on the west shore of Gwaii Haanas, Haida Gwaii.
See my earlier post Sandscape for more information.
Today I am back up to Haida Gwaii, and tomorrow I boat down into Gwaii Haanas for nearly two weeks of fieldwork.
This time we will be working on the protected shores of the north east part of Gwaii Haanas.
This is a totally different environment from that which we visited on the west side a couple of months ago.
As a consequence it had a much higher population density and the archaeological sites are much more frequent which will make the work interesting and busy.
On my previous field trip I visited my granddaughter and her parents who now live not far from where I was working.
It’s a short ferry ride and 35 minute drive.
I got back yesterday and tomorrow I head off for another 2 weeks back to Gwaii Haanas in Haida Gwaii.
That trip will be completely off grid for most of those two weeks.
In Courtenay, we were waiting at the Red Tree coffee shop for my daughter to get off work, and for me to take a work phone call.
Red Tree is a seriously hipster place replete with beards and mason jars.
But the coffee, tea and crepes were very good.
