This lookout on Gonzales Hill is a remnant of WWII coastal defences.
This structure was an observation post.
It had a gable roof and was disguised to look like the other houses on the hill.
At the high point it has a terrific 360° view.
I don’t know what the concrete cube atop the main box is all about.
But as you can see in these photos, there is simultaneously a strong 3D aspect to this spot and a graphic 2D one.
Depending on your point of view.

This post is my companion to today’s other post – the rest of the roll of Ektar. It has lots of pictures of my granddaughter and berries and flowers, and also a series of crops to show how fine the grain is. Click on one of the links to go to the post and see the rest of the images, or click here.
Its Week 25 for me and this is another roll put through Canon Elan 7N. I chose this camera because I trust it to make excellent exposures and I was testing my first roll of Ektar 100 which I hear is fussy when it comes to exposure. I shot it at box speed with a few made through a 50/1.4 lens and most with a 100/2.8 macro. I have split the roll between 52 Rolls and my own blog and the others are publishing simultaneously at this link – that post has some architectural shots from a winery as well.
These pictures are taken in my yard, with my granddaughter discovering the joys of salmonberries, a native plant that produces juicy and mild flavoured berries early in the spring. Salmonberries come in a couple of range of colour variations as you can see here. This roll is a bit sad…

I recently ran a roll of Ektar through my Canon Elan 7N. It is a film I had meant to try for some time as it has a lot of quite vocal fans. After this one roll I have mixed feelings about it. It has wonderfully rich, almost too rich, colours but is horrible for skin tones. It has extremely fine grain – more so than any other film I have used but is difficult to scan, and if you don’t get a good exposure it is unforgiving.
These pictures are shot around my garden, with a few taken at the Starling Lane Winery that I had to hang out at for a while one day. Mostly they are of my granddaughter and the joy of salmonberries and other bits and pieces in the garden. The best of those shots are posted as part of my 52Rolls project and published simultaneously to this one there (at this link).
This is the front of the Gonzales Observatory, looking out over Gonzales Beach, Harling Point and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
I took this picture a few minutes before yesterday’s which are on the opposite side of this building.
You can see that it was necessary to constrain this building from wandering off down to the beach to observe the sunbathers.

Here are a couple more shots from Point No Point – these are along the path out to the Red Bridge.
Part of a series taken when Melinda was visiting in late April.
A year ago I had a series of photos called Cubism featuring the concrete cube, or Pandorica, out back of the Gonzales Observatory.
It is on the hill behind my neighbourhood, and is a nice destination for a walk.
I went up there last night at sunset and here are a couple of shots with a wider angle lens than I had to use before.
A few weeks back now I started this roll of film and only recently finished it off so it gets counted as my 24th roll even though some of the shots date back 8 weeks or so. These were taken when Melinda Green Harvey was visiting me from Texas. This link is to a post she did from the same time as these pictures were taken.
The Chinese Cemetery is a National Historic Site located a block from my house so I am often found there, taking pictures along the waterfront. This post gives some of the interesting history of the site, and has links to various histories.
The camera was a Mamiya M645 Super, the film fresh Fuji Pro 400H. I am very pleased with how it handled the sunset colours, I don’t mind the magenta cast at all, in fact I really like it. Some other shots from…
