Impressions

2015-7N-003-011

I guess it’s a good thing this sign isn’t out front, or people might make a first impression before going indoors for some peeling. There is of course the sign’s condition which probably looked casual even when new. And then there is also the subliminal message sent by the razor blade stuck in the lattice-work, which you probably did not see until I mentioned it.

This sign is for a hair stylist – I searched for a web site, but only came up with a directory listing. Below is a short excerpt from a multiplicity of typical services.

“Ultrasonic peeling is an alternative approach to the classic facial and is particularly suitable for people with ultra-sensitive skin. … Microdermabrasion works by gently exfoliates (sic) th[e] outer epidermal layer, the stratum conreum, buffing away dead and dull skin cells to reveal a fresh, younger-looking skin beneath. Pure, sugar-fine mineral crystals gently sweep away the damaged surface cells, encouraging the skin’s natural renewal process, so that radiant, refined skin can shine through. The procedure is quick and relatively painless.”

The sign is perfection in the sign-makers art – surely when you look at it you are given a sense of peeling, abrasion, exfoliation and perhaps even “relatively painless”.

Vine Tracings

P7210963

This rock is at the upper edge of the intertidal zone on “Pebble Beach” in my neighbourhood.

I think the vine might be morning-glory, but I am not sure as I took this last summer and wasn’t paying close botanical attention.

I cropped it square for I (where I might have posted it but can’t remember).

Square works well, so I have not revisited the original shot to rework it.

Drain Breaker II

2015-XA2-002-Silverfast-(17)-3

Another black and white conversion from my number six roll at the 52 Rolls Project.

This is the way the scanner detected the frames on a stretch of film that had serious light leaks introduced when the camera back popped open (see here for the original colour version).

I quite like the way this distressed diptych came out in black and white, which means you get to see it too.

The Parental Units

2014-XA-002-24

Long ago my siblings and I used to refer to our parents as the parental units, or more properly The Parental Units.

We don’t do that anymore, but I do hear that term in my head from time to time.

Like when I see this picture I took of them last summer when we went to the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific for a walk and tea.

A few weeks ago they had their 60th wedding anniversary, which really is a very long time.

While learning how to use a new work camera last  summer I came across this sign in the gravel outside the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Which prompted me to look at their website to see if it was their Jubilee, which indeed it was and still is.

We spent a lot of time at this place with our growing kids that were interested in music, and we spanned the move from their old and crumbling building near Beacon Hill Park to a large former church complex on Quadra and Pandora Streets – not the best part of town, but the facility was a huge improvement. They did a good job teaching music – one of our kids is making his living solely from music since before he turned 20.
