On Guard II

IMG_3204_5_6

In the summer I posted a black and white shot of this same subject in Port Angeles, Washington. I think I like that one’s point of view best, but the gold paint certainly adds something that is missing from my first post. It ramps up the kitsch factor, if nothing else.

Tofino 1982 – Wandering Mind

Meares82-0011

A couple of months ago I posted a shot of Tofino harbour that I took in 1982 and only recently scanned and brought to digital life. These shots are from that same roll of film. I was going to subtitle this post Wanda, but my mind wandered while my fingers were still attached to the keyboard. All over 1982 and fieldwork on the coast.

I could find nothing on the web about the fishing boat Wanda seen in both these photos. I don’t know if that means she is no longer, or just low profile or renamed.

[Edit: More than a year after posting this, I got the following comment on my About page: “The Wanda was sitting as a piece of landscaping just off the highway in Sidney BC last time I saw her. Ralph Tieleman Tofino BC”. Thanks Ralph! This is pretty ironic since I grew up in the Sidney area and have driven past the Wanda hundreds of times at the corner of Beacon Avenue and the Pat Bay Highway. Sometime more than 5 years ago the Wanda was removed from that location. I can’t imagine to a good fate either. I found a good picture of her in position as an ornamental reminder of the fishing history of the area – ironically it is taken by someone I went to school with. This is a great example of seeing and yet not seeing all at once. Perhaps if my world centred on fishing boats I would have made the connection at once.]

Grandchild 7

IMG_7806-2

My granddaughter will be 11 months old in a few days. Hard as it is for me to believe that she is that old, soon she will be counting her own age, and we all will be reckoning it in years, not weeks and months.  I could not choose between this series of photos from a few days ago, so I made a slide show out of them. They show some of her character and constant motion.

Man Shadow Dog

IMG_7846-Edit

Two more photographs of shadows from a high vantage point at Clover Point beside Ross Bay. When I took the other photographs (see here and here) I was waiting for this dog and his man, and accompanying shadows to arrive. I had spotted them in the distance and thought that they might make a pretty nice shot. They did not walk in the ideal line (and I was not going to shout down from the edge to see if he would retrace his steps by a slightly different route). I think the first one I posted is the best placement of the man and shadow. But the top one here works pretty well

Half Frame People

PenTestFirst2400 16-8bit 6-4

Another few images from the first roll through the Olympus Pen half frame camera. These pictures are of people, indoors (all but one). This was my attempt at estimating light indoors without a meter, and trying to get the focus right for closer subjects, and seeing how people come through generally since I am not much of a portrait photographer.

Macro Blues

IMG_3542-Edit

Shots from this summer in the Olympic Mountains. These two butterflies were “caught in the act”. They were so absorbed by their reproductive urges that I could take a lot of pictures. These are all hand-held, some are cropped and others not.

My naturalist friends Bill Yake and Jeannette Barreca from Washington State tell me that this is either the Greenish Blue (Plebejus saepiolus) or Boisduval’s Blue  (Plebejus icarioides). They say the rubbed condition of these makes identification tricky.  I’ll take their word for it as my time as an entomology museum technician ended 38 years ago and everything I might have known then was forgotten decades ago.

Cathi Jefferson – Cups

IMG_7868

This time a couple of years ago I did a post about Cathi Jefferson, and more recently another on a single one of her pots here. Cathi is a ceramic artist who lives in the Cowichan Valley not too far north of us here on Vancouver Island. The first post had photos taken at the annual Out of Hand craft fair which she sells at every year and I recommend that you check it out to see a wider variety of pots that she makes. This year’s craft fair was this past weekend and it was a pleasure to see her again, and to shop at her stall. I have meant for more than a year to do a post like the one today, which includes many yunomis, some wine cups and mugs.
