Dockside Shadows
Yet more from the frosty deck in the Dockside Green series. Sunrise shadows are pretty awesome things, and this is no exception. Check out the length of the shadow in the lower left – from a small splinter of wood.
I think I prefer the colour version, though the textures are wonderful in the black and white.

Apologies to my commenters, I have been otherwise occupied for a few days and not able to reply. I hope to catch up over the weekend.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually think I prefer the B&W one! It’s stunning – the textures of the dock are amazing.

Hi Laurie – I love those textures too. I think it is allowable to like a bit of black and white 🙂

Great, great shots. It’s a dead heat! – I can’t express a preference, it’s just a difference in mood – they are equally as good

Thanks so much Andy! Dead heat’s are good:)

The tonal range of the B&W is astonishing, Ehpem! Each image has a different feel – isn’t that an amazing opportunity in photography? – and I like them both, but the B&W totally wows! me.

Thanks Lynn! It is amazing what you can draw out of an image (or three in this case) in post. These two images are a good example of the range of possibilities (without going off into hard-core changes).

B&W is my favourite of the two in the post. I love the splinter shadow! The colour banner catches my eye. What is it, Mr E? Ice?

Hi Katherine. Isn’t that splinter shadow amazing? It’s many times longer than the splinter itself.
The banner is crystals from one of my macro shots of a plate with a crystalline glaze. This one: https://burntembers.com/2012/12/29/crystalline-macro-ii/

I like the angle you shot this one from – it makes for some very interesting shapes. This time, I like the b&w version. This has been a great series!

Thanks Melinda. Glad you are enjoying the series. The shapes were handed to me on a platter (a frosty one), I had little to do with it:)

Except: you saw it, recognized the photographic possibilities, and took the picture(s).

There is that. This would seem to be a lousy time to confess that I just strap the camera on, set the timer to fire every few seconds and walk around, blindly.

Right. I am pretty sure I am going to believe you.
(I do something similar, only all my stuff’s shot on an early-model iPhone.)

Wow, great textures and tones, prefer the b&w for detail and drama! Greetz, Ron.

Hi Ron – thank you! I am coming around to preferring the black and white, as I look again.
