SGang Gwaay XVIII
Another panorama shot from the back of a house feature at SGang Gwaay last October (see this post for the other).
This one is taken with my back against a low cliff close behind the house, and is combined from two wide angle (16 mm on full frame) photos.

I should note that there are at least three numbering schemes for the houses and/or poles at SGang Gwaay – the web page linked above is an illustration from George MacDonald’s Monumental Haida Art.
SGang Gwaay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island on the south-west side of Gwaii Haanas

I will never forget the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate on archaeological excavations at this unique and spiritual place back in the 90s. As a Parks Canada archaeologist at the time, I spent 3 wonderful weeks on-site assisting in the straightening of mortuary poles – working with memorable people like Tucker Brown, Tommy Green, and Daryl Fedje. We tented at the south end of the village. The whole time I was there I would hear the talking of ancestors, the laughter of children, and the smell smoke of house hearths.
