This is my Roll 13 for the 2016 52 Rolls project. The roll had shots from the Duncan area, and Victoria and this post has the Duncan shots. You will find others from this roll on Burnt Embers over the next few weeks, including yesterday and the day before.
In February I made a trip up island to Duncan and the Lake Cowichan area. This film has waited for a scan since then so it is out of sequence.
Vancouver Island is a big place at 460km long as the raven flies. A real trip up island, to the other end from Victoria where I am, is a solid eight-hour drive, and that is not even the north tip. A trip to Duncan at just over an hour is barely up island, commuting distance for some.
I took along an Olympus XA2 and am glad I did. The light ended up being really interesting. It was pouring at Lake Cowichan and I got soaked in 5 minutes of picture-taking but by the time I got back to Duncan the sun was breaking out, now and then. Great winter light typical of this area – dark skies and bright patches of sun…

I have previously posted Temple Details, and Nishan Sahib shot on very expired colour film as a test roll in a new-to-me Elan IIe. I had this camera in my pocket as well, and this shot was made at the same time, on much better film. I was immediately struck, while looking through the view finder, how this wider angle lens worked so much better for this view. And I was struck again by that same opinion when I saw these images come out of the scanner a couple of days ago.
I don’t know what goes on inside here. It might be its very own building, or an extension to a shop.
In any case, it is around back, in Duncan.
Looking around back is something I learned from Melinda Green Harvey who is always showing interesting photos of stuff she finds around back.
More from this roll is published simultaneously as part of my 52Rolls project as Up Island.

I thought I would occasionally pull forward pictures from when I started blogging.
(I am running out of my free allocation of space at WP).
This was part of the post Glass Gate Sunset from one of my first posts in Sept 2011.
The Belfry Theatre is in an old church, which is hardly surprising given its name, and how batty playwrights can be.
This is one of the windows, blocked off on the inside, but still nice on the outside when the morning light hits it.
Another test from the Espio 120SW, showing the fairly heavy vignetting at 28mm focal length.
This is the rest of the wall show in my recent post A Breath of Fresh Air.
As I recall, this shot was made with partial telephoto zoom.
My interest was in the line of the hedge versus the rest of the scene, and I don’t think that bit worked.
But I kind of like the photo, with the Belfry Theatre steeple looming overhead.
See my About page for details.
