Happy Anniversary

2015-GW690-04-001

Today’s photos are portraits of my parents taken at their place last November. Today they have been married for 61 years which I find hard to comprehend, even though I have been married 30 years.

Today’s post at 52 Rolls, GW690 Woes, the first in my 2016 roll/week project, shows some others from this and another roll of film – some worked out fine and some did not due to camera failure!

One lesson I am learning as I use this camera is that it is fantastic for portraits but the depth of field is extremely shallow at f3.5 and shooting moving people in lower light just does not work. For that reason I took a roll of 3200 ISO film on my second visit to my parents house for a Christmas meal. Good thing I did because the light was much lower, and I still ended up working with f3.5 for most shots, with longish handheld exposures too. You can see those shots at GW690 Woes as well.

When we went to visit our daughter and her family just before Christmas we stayed at The Alders, a resort comprised of small cabins on the beach at the end of the same road our daughter lives on.  A few photos were included in an post Not Solstice Shots made on another roll of film.

All of these have been shot with an Olympus XA2. More of this roll can be found at The Last of 2015 and Zip Line.

This film was commercially scanned, twice. The first time it had brightly coloured stripes through most of the images. I took it back, but even though they scanned at a higher resolution and with more care, there is still a lot of banding in some of the scans (especially after I adjusted some of the levels in Lightroom to get them closer to what I would have done with a scanner). I guess I will have to rescan a few of these myself when I can find the time – the bottom shot here is worth some more attention I think.

Zip Line

2015-XA2-005-23

Our granddaughter (and her parents!) came to visit a few days after Christmas, and one of the activities was a nostalgic visit to her former neighbourhood playground in Beacon Hill Park. It has a zip-line suitable for small kids and I tried to capture the motion and fun. Only one photograph got close to that ideal – there were several times that the shutter did not fire right when I wanted it to and eventually I switched over to my phone to take some photos. Even so, the shot above was worth the effort.

These are from the Olympus XA2 that bumped my mjuii from the jacket pocket for most of December.

More of this roll can be found at The Last of 2015 my final post in the 2015 as part of my 52 Rolls project which has photos of my granddaughter from our visit to her town before Christmas. It was not certain that they could visit, so it was especially nice to be able to see them twice within about a week.

The Last of 2015

Here are some granddaughter photos from my last 2015 roll on my 52 rolls in 2015 project. Tomorrow there will be a few more from this roll on my blog. The lead photograph is one of my favourites of 2015 – just sneaking under the wire for the year.

This is my last post of 2015, and for me, it is week 53 since I have chosen to follow this calendar’s numbering. If you are interested in seeing my selection of favourite shots from these 53 (+) rolls, I have posted it today at my blog (at this link).

Just before Christmas we traveled north on Vancouver Island to a small rural community north of Comox to visit our granddaughter and her parents. Today’s photos are from that visit on a damp and chilly day when we did a bit of baby sitting by taking a walk on fisherman’s wharf in Comox Harbour. There is more to this roll of film, but it will show up on my blog as time permits. I love the featured shot – the colours and simplicity and dynamic pose all appeal to me but perhaps most of all I appreciate the “3”…
