Around Juan Perez Sound

Roll 38 at 52 rolls is from Juan Perez Sound and Burnaby Narrows. Film from my summer visit to Gwaii Haanas will soon be over with another couple of rolls of film. Most of these images have not previously appeared at Burnt Embers so please click on the link to 52 Rolls to see nearly the whole roll.

As you are seeing in recent posts, I made several visits to the Juan Perez Sound area this past summer while cruising aboard the Passing Cloud in Gwaii Haanas. This roll of film includes shots from De La Beche Inlet (map link) at the western edge of Juan Perez Sound, another visit to Hotspring Island (map link) which is more central and near the eastern edge and then to Burnaby or Dolomite Narrows (map link) and Bag Harbour (map link) at and just beyond the south end of the Sound.

Burnaby Narrows (as it is locally known) is a shallow winding passage between Burnaby and Moresby Islands through which immense amounts of water flow when the tide is running. It very nearly dry out in places, and the abundance of sea life is incredible – it is impossible to take a step without crushing several animals. Tour operators…

Gordon Cove Mono III

2016-olymjuii-011-25-2

Some of the photos from Gordon Cove that I published recently at 52Rolls.net (here) are made for black and white conversion.

Previously (here) I converted a digital photo of this same view but with a much wider lens.

This is another of them.

Apparently this is my 2,000th post on WordPress. With 6,400 images. That seems like an awful lot.

South into Gwaii Haanas

Roll 37 at 52 rolls, more from Gwaii Haanas and surrounds. Lots of seascapes. I don’t think any of these have appeared at Burnt Embers yet, so you might want to follow the link over to 52Rolls to see most of the roll.

It is beginning to feel like I might complete posts for 52 rolls before the end of the year after all. My backlog has about 8 more rolls, at least, and another is being processed this weekend, and then there are a few rolls in cameras, partly exposed.

My summer Haida Gwaii trip aboard the Passing Cloud included several passes through the Juan Perez Sound area that lies at the center of the east coast of Gwaii Haanas.

Over the past two decades I have spent many months in this area, walking the shores recording and testing archaeological sites. It is always a pleasure to return.

This roll includes images that start north of Gwaii Haanas at the Watchman site of K’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans) and then to T’aanu Llnagaay (Tanu) north of Juan Perez Sound on Tanu Island, then past Windy Bay along the east coast of Lyell Island and into the Sound including the Hotsprings area and then out of the NW corner of the Sound into another, Darwin Sound. The image captions in the gallery indicate the photo location.

Unfortunately, I did not take film photos while ashore at the old villages, so there is only one picture and it…

Testing an Olympus mju1 (Stylus)

Rolls 35 and 36 from my 52Rolls project, shot half a year ago now while testing this small camera. Some of the photos have appeared on Burnt Embers, but most have not. Click through the link to 52Rolls to see many of the images from these two rolls.

2016-mju1-002-2

This post is the result of two rolls of Agfa Vista 200 put through an Olympus mju-1, or Stylus (not the mjuii or Stylus Epic that I use all the time). Some North Americans refer to it as the Stylus Infinity though it is unclear to me why as it only says Stylus on the cameras I have seen. I found the camera in a thrift store in the spring for less than $10, which is a pretty good price. A few years ago I bought one for $1, but I got what I paid for as it was not working.

Conclusions first – the camera, when working, can make excellent photographs. While not quite as capable and flexible as the mjuii, it is definitely a camera to keep an eye open for. They are usually much cheaper than the mjuii and well worth the price.

I was looking for a camera to send off…

Gordon Cove Mono

Cumshewa Inlet

Reblogging my roll 34 for 2016 over at 52Rolls. This roll is pretty much all about the light and reflections in Gordon Cove at the west end of Cumshewa Inlet. I had a hard time choosing the lead image as I really like several of them. Click on the 52Rolls link to see nearly the whole roll.

While on last summer’s Haida Gwaii trip aboard the Passing Cloud we had a layover between cruises and groups of passengers.

The photos on this roll are taken on the trip down Cumshewa Inlet and mostly in Gordon Cove at the west end of the inlet 30km from Hecate Strait. It was very calm, with terrific light in the morning, making for some fantastic reflections, and as a result I went a bit overboard (not literally) with the shutter clicks. Gordon Cove is on Moresby Island well north of the Gwaii Haanas protected area. Cumshewa Inlet map is at this link, Gordon Cove at this link just south of Moresby Camp

This anchorage is near the end of the road that connects to Sandspit (see my Sandspit post here). Normally these guest exchanges alternate between the end of the road with passengers coming and leaving in a van and a float plane…
