Santa Monica Pier on Film
I took three shots on film of the Santa Monica Pier when I was taking the photo workshop with Sam Abell.
There are a lot of things to like about the film shot compared to the similar digital views (see one below).
Mostly I think the attraction comes from mood created by the black and white, the silhouette, and the grain

Top image: Olympus XA2, Ilford XP2, this roll metered variously between ISO200 and 800 depending on the light.
Bottom image: Canon 5Dii, Canon EF 50/1.4 lens, ISO200, f10, 1/400th

You hit it exactly, I think – the black and white, the graininess, the lack of detail – all make the film shot so much more moody. Posting the two together is instructive and interesting.

Thanks Lynn. It is often instructive to have comparisons like this. I should use to cameras in sync more often.
