Observed Leap

IMG_1465-2

I was shooting the railing and shadows on the side of the  Gonzales Hill Observatory when these people, and their dog, leaped into my photo. Of course I just kept on shooting. This would explain the focus point, but I think it works just fine the way it is. However, I can’t make up my mind about colour or black and white. It is a shame to lose the red on the dog harness, but other than that I see little to choose between them.

For some reason I cropped them a bit differently – I don’t remember why, and it was only two days ago. Bad sign, that.

Cubism II

IMG_1473-2

As I noted in a recent post about this object (I don’t feel that it is properly called a structure) I had been oblivious to it’s existence in spite of numerous visits to the Gonzales Observatory. On looking at the pictures I took, I think I have discovered why that might be – it has been freshly painted and is standing out from the surroundings more than it used to. A mundane explanation. I hope no one gets in trouble for removing its disguise.

I have also considered Katherine’s (Photobooth Journal)  suggestion that it might be a concrete Pandorica, stripped of its text inscriptions. Since it has a vent pipe, I think this is not likely, unless it too is part of a disguise. But, if you look at my original Gonzales Observatory post, you will see that these days it is keeping a very close eye (or nose) on the earth’s atmosphere. Perhaps something extraterrestrial is up with this cube.

Vest Pocket Results

2014-VP01-7-2

I  recently posted about a Kodak Vest Pocket Model B folding camera that I was given which seems likely to have been my grandmother’s. Today I show the results of the roll of film that I ran through the camera right after that post. Read this post for lots of detailed pictures of the camera, and some of the history too. Do I like these technically flawed shots? Yes, they are very nostalgic. I like the idea that what is the first roll of film in this camera for probably 50 or 60 years, includes shots of my father who may have featured in earlier photos from this camera, when he was a child. I like also that it has shots of one of my own children on it as well, on what could well be the last roll of film that runs through the camera.

You will see from this roll of film (the entire roll is in this post) that the camera has some serious issues. Foremost are light leaks, several of them, at least one significant one in the bellows, and likely one around the seals of the film compartment, and possibly also through the red window in the back of the camera. Another problem arises from the extensive dust inside the camera – I brushed and wiped the insides of the camera very thoroughly, and blew it out with compressed air before loading the film. Perhaps I just loosened ancient fragments of the bellows or something, but the myriad black specks on the images are junk on the film at the time of exposure.

Concrete Vein

IMG_1457

To me this is a microscopic cross-section of the veins, or perhaps nerves, of a venerable building.

To you it might be the rendered and repaired vertical surface of stairs at the Gonzales Observatory.

Either way, if you like concrete, then this shot is for you.

IMG_1471-Edit

I have been up to the Gonzales Observatory many times to look at its luscious curved dome and rounded windows and the beautiful view. I have never before noticed this cube out back even though I have passed it often. I suppose there was something about the light that finally made me notice it. Better late than never!
