Rainy Path

IMG_8602

This path is on the way up from the beach in front of Beacon Hill Park, taken a few months ago when it was really wet out.

This could be considered an extension of my series of the spiral staircase since this is the path that leads to the stairs.

Emplacement

IMG_1496-Edit

This is now a lookout on a high point of Gonzales Hill just to the east of the observatory.  It was constructed in WWII as part of the naval harbour defences. I believe it held a search light.

When built it had a gable roof where the viewing platform is in order to make it look like a house on the hill. Likewise the “wood siding” moulded into the concrete. There are terrific views from here to the west over Gonzales Bay (in more nautical times called Foul Bay due to it being foul with rock) as well as to the east out over San Juan Island to the mainland.

IMG_1478-Edit

This is a detail of the large concrete block behind the Gonzales Observatory; other photos of the same structure can be seen here.

This is another pretty heavy treatment of the original image that in this case brings out the joins and other textures of the plywood form used in pouring the concrete.

It also has a bit of an optical illusion – is that the outside or inside of a vertical corner? The top looks outside, the bottom looks more inside.

Stormy Drain II

IMG_0788_89_90

More for the storm drain series, the last of which looked as if it is long and floating. The main difference between this shot and the last one Long Drain is the length of the exposure, and that this is a 3-bracket HDR treatment. I think this one shows how the sea conditions could make Long Drain turn out as it did.

Others from the same day include Storm Drain IV and Stormy Drain.

It was such a bright day that my ND filter did not give me the length of exposure I was hoping for, but the water and clouds have a nice feel.

Concrete Veins in Context

IMG_1456

This is a follow-up to the Concrete Vein and Vein with Needles posts to show their context on the side of the Gonzales Observatory.

Yesterday’s shot is a crop from this one. The first post is a crop and rotation from one similar to this.

Not so abstract this time. More concrete.

Vein with Needles

IMG_1456-2

This is a follow-up to the Concrete Vein post, and is on the same concrete cross-section of the Gonzales Observatory, but a much more delicate vein.

I like how the pine needles and tiny plant make  this seem like some mountain ledge in the distance.

It’s another one for the concrete-abstractionists.
