Maple Leaf

I took these pictures 2 or 3 weeks ago when we took some of our apples out to Oldfield Valley to get them juiced. The owner of this row of trees tells me these leaves are from sugar maples. Not having seen a sugar maple that I can remember, I will take his word for it.

Cat Nest

Wasp Art Macros

Another set of wet and windy day shots taken indoors next to the wood stove.

This is a wasp nest that was established in a wooden box on my front porch. The wasps are long dead and so I brought in a bit of the nest to take pictures on my kitchen table as I loved the colours in it. The wasps must have had access to a lot of very freshly cut wood when building this nest.

Cow Bay Boat House

This reflection of a boat house is the last of my Cowichan Bay series that has run the past week. This is by far my favourite picture from that outing and I would have been happy with just it and no others. It was taken as we were leaving the dock at dusk, in low light levels, with the ISO cranked up pretty high and shutter speeds well below recommended (I would love an image stabilising lens, but sadly have none). I took several sets of brackets to ensure I got one set in focus, though the shot does not really need an HDR treatment. However, it does give ghosts in the reflections that work very well and brings out the glow in the aluminum surfaces and so I have stuck with the HDR version. The black and white conversion seemed obvious, it was monochrome anyway, but very blue, too blue for my tastes.

This boat house has shown up in my last two posts – I noticed it from afar and started framing it into my shots. I like the one from a couple of days ago quite a lot, but this point of view really did the trick for me.

Cow Bay Float House

Cowichan Bay is home to a lot of floating houses, although most of them are not at the dock that we walked out on, this one is right next to where we were. I think this slightly grungy HDR treatment works well for these shots – it brings up the sky very well, and its reflection in the empty berth. I think I probably missed the shot this time – these are my only two sets of brackets from here. I prefer the top picture for the way it embraces the empty berth, but I do wish that I had got all the roof line of the float house, and more brackets to expose better for the house and boats. I also have a thing for that metal boat house on the left side, as showed up yesterday and will be featured tomorrow. The second shot is nice enough, especially with the boat and its reflection to the right, and is based on a better exposure, but I don’t like the composition as much. I guess I should have tried a 5 bracket panorama of this location, then I could have had edible cake. But, I would have needed a tripod to really pull that off. My camera only does 3 brackets automatically, and for handheld brackets it is pretty hard to get comparable framing after looking at the camera to reset the exposure.
