I went by the storm drain (I check it out several times a week for photo ops) last week at high tide and Nickel Brothers had their barge snugged up beside it having just loaded a house from James Bay in Victoria, destined for Orcas Island in Washington State. This is a shot of the storm drain, you just have to look for it harder than usual. The lighting was pretty difficult, so I opted for bracketing and an HDR treatment.
Had I known this was going to happen, I would probably have come down earlier to shoot some timelapse, as I did before in my own neighbourhood. You can see that video in my post There Goes the Neighbourhood as well as learn more about this fairly common activity of moving houses rather than just crushing them for the landfill.
About a year and a half ago I posted a bunch of pictures of the local cover band Broken Strings in which my son plays. In October I was down at the Canoe Brew Pub for their weekly performance with my sister and her partner who were visiting from overseas.
I did not go equipped to take pictures, but I did have my Olympus XA in my pocket with black and white film in it. So, I took some shots by setting the camera on the table top, and firing it with the self timer. They were long exposures – a few seconds I think, though I have no way of knowing exactly how long. If the table was not jogged (which it was in the last shot) during an exposure then they came out remarkably clear, or at least the stationary gear did. The band members on the other hand are barely recognisable in only a few instances. Still, I like these pictures, and especially how the shiny table top blends into the stage surface as if it were part of the stage.
We have counted down to zero lights, no parkades, no mixed siding.
Now, there are triplet bolt heads here, and a trio of hinges, and window panes in threes and twos along with a singular lock, handle and meter.
But the shine is taken off the siding with black paint.
One side of this building is where we started with the trio of lights and shiny corrugated siding and glass blocks.
Its confirmed, we are counting down. From a trio, through the duo, to the lonely solo.
This light probably feels all mixed up, residing on a mixed wall.
The wall is part of the alley-side of a building I showed before here.
Does this feel like a countdown from yesterday’s trio?
I think it might turn out that way – but you will have to wait for tomorrow to see.
Found outside a downtown car park.
Another building just beyond the northern edge of Victoria’s Chinatown, it faces the buildings in Old Something New of a few days ago.
Is it just my way of seeing, or do lights like these often come in triplets – like here?
I think there is an old building inside this new cladding, but I could be completely wrong about this one.
Maurizio and Massimo are the owners of the Italian Deli and Macchiato Caffe & Paninoteca coffee shop locations in Victoria. I have been a customer of the Italian Deli since the dark ages of food quality and variety in Victoria when it was one of very few places selling great food in a European style. I was a teenager then and I suppose Maurizio and Massimo were children – their parents founded the business and ran it until maybe 10 years ago or so. So, I have ‘known’ these guys since they really young helping out in the store – even so, I don’t know which name goes with which brother.
I came across them in another part of town a few weeks ago and chatted for a while. I thought they were on a break, but it turns out that they own this business too, one of two coffee shops that are much more recent than the deli business. They said I could take their picture, and that I could post it here – thanks guys!
If you are in Victoria looking for high quality Italian food ingredients, a terrific fresh sandwich at lunchtime, an Italian salad, or excellent pasta, then drop by the Italian Deli in Blanshard Street. If you are more interested in a great coffee and snack, then check out their coffee shops.
