Pumpkin with Sushi

2014-XA-007-038_For_Print

Well, it is nearing Christmas and I have finally scanned my negatives that include my one and only Halloween photograph.

I asked this woman if I could photograph her, and she was glad to oblige – Halloween is good that way.

Privacy is both preserved and thrown out the window at the same time when wearing costumes in the street.

Not sure how she was going to eat the sushi. And while her hair may have been damp with pumpkin juices, it was well protected from the rain.

Old Something New

2014-XA-007-009

This building is at, or just beyond, the northern edge of Victoria’s Chinatown.

I find myself testing cameras on the other side quite often, though I don’t think I have shown any shots before this.

Any side is pretty hard to get a good exposure of as it is so bright and reflective, but it is full of interesting detail.

The Olympus XA seems to nail the exposure each time. One reason it, or an XA2, lives in my coat pocket.

I find that, in some way I can’t really put words to, the metal clad building with all its lines goes well with the old brick, and all its lines.

Triplet 3

3 murals2014-M645-003-015

This mural is at right angles across the parking lot to the one shown in Triplet 2.

I re-cycled the title since there are three murals here, even if there are only two lights.

This has quite different feel and colour than Triplet 2, not just because of the light,

but also because this expired negative film has some colour shifts that are quite different from the expired positive film in that other shot.

R.I.P. Cat Number Two

IMG_4736_Lge

Cat number 2 passed away last night. She was having quite a few different complaints and in sum there was nothing left that could be done. She was quite a bit older than we had supposed and she had a few tough years which likely took their toll.

Cat number 1 will not mind one bit, but her humans will miss cat number 2. Even though she was exceptionally timid and rarely (as in maybe 4 or 5 times in total) approached us for a pat, she was approachable under particular circumstances (when asleep and she was relaxed) and we would pat her a few times a day when we could find her latest sleeping centre.

She found the strangest places to sleep. In the shot below she is curled up on my son’s double bass – a place she used for a week or two until the bass had to be moved.

The third shot is taken near dinner time, when she would appear and even mew a bit sometimes, in chorus with cat number 1. Feeding was pretty much the only time the two tolerated each other being within a few feet. However, they did stand shoulder to shoulder at the cat door to fend off intruders, raccoons included. So there was a mutual acknowledgement of co-ownership of the house, though they subdivided it to suit their needs.

The top shot is the sunny front window. She liked to get behind the curtains if they were drawn, and sit for hours watching the world and soaking up the sun.

Analogue Drain

2014-M645-004-012

This was taken on one of those beautiful fall days that have now abandoned this part of the world.

The past few days have seen torrential rain and strong wind so it is nice to be reminded of these calm warm days from last month.

This could be considered part of the Ross Bay Stroll  post as it was taken at the same time as those photos.

Beaded Benches

2014-M645-002-008-2

I was thinking black and white when I took this shot on colour film. But now I can’t decide which I like best.

The colour of the benches is really nice and pulls the eye through the photo well.

But the light in black and white is very effective. Toss up I guess.

It probably would have been a better shot with a person sitting on a bench, but they were much too wet for that.

I shot this with the Mamiya M645 on a roll of thrift-store Kodak 160VC-2 that expired in 2009.

Rear View Coat Rack

2014-XA-004-021

I imagine that it is quite cool inside the sewage works at Clover Point, even in the summer as when I took this photo.

So did this worker leave his coat on the truck mirror to keep it from absorbing stench, or just because it was hot out and he forgot about needing it inside?

In either case, he eventually fetched it and went back in.
